The Birthplace of Silicon Valley

inner workings of a computer motherboard

Indulge your inner techie with a trip to the actual spot where Silicon Valley was born: the Hewlett Packard Garage. A quick 15-minute drive from Menlo Park Inn, the house located at 367 Addison Ave, Palo Alto, became the home of David and Lucile Packard shortly after the two married in 1938. Bill Hewlett soon moved into the shack in the backyard (the dirt floor has now been replaced with wood, but otherwise, it’s basically the same) and the modest one-car garage, which was named a California Historical Landmark in 1989, became Bill and David’s first workshop. In 2007, the entire property took its place on the National Register of Historic Places, and the HP Garage itself is now a private museum, where visitors can inspect a number of fascinating gadgets, including the HP200A, an audio oscillator and HP’s very first product.
