Experience the Mystery
Think all historic home tours are the same? Then you haven't seen the Winchester Mystery House. Owned by Sarah Winchester, widow of William Winchester, the manufacturer of the famous Winchester rifle, she used the house as an outlet for her grief upon losing her husband and child. She kept construction going on the Victorian-style mansion for 38 years, expanding it to 160 different rooms, with strange architectural choices like stairs that didn't match, doors that led nowhere and rooms that have since been completely sealed off by the constant remodeling ordered by the eccentric Mrs. Winchester. Today, visitors can tour the house as well as the elaborate and beautiful gardens. And if you're intrigued by the theory that Mrs. Winchester made such strange building choices as a way of avoiding evil spirits, you might be interested in the flashlight tour, an after-dark jaunt through the mansion every Friday the 13th. Afterwards, you can return to the comfort of your room at our (evil spirit-free) Bay Area hotel.
